Hello!
I was looking through my "Southern Living" Magazine the other day and it said that October is the time to start planting bulbs for the Spring. So, check out your area and see what bulbs need to be planted now for them to be ready and beautiful and blooming late February through April. The magazine mentioned daffodils, hyacinth, snow flakes.
Its also time to plant pansies for the Fall. Pansies are such a happy little flower!
I am ready for a little bit cooler temperatures so that we can get working in our garden and getting it ready for the Spring. The drought we suffered here in Texas pretty much ended all our lovely produce but I loved it while it lasted! The heat also impeded my husband from mowing as much so there were times when the grass was too tall for me to be out in the garden....because unfortunately, we live in snake country and Copperheads seem to really like our area because we have a wetlands area behind us.....lovely, I know.
However, for snake problems, I love to use "Snake Off". Its a powder product that you sprinkle around your house and yard and it smells like cinnamon. You can order it at http://doityourselfpestcontrol.com/ and after I used it, we did not see any snakes around our house/yard for 3-4 months but its time to apply some again.
I also have been reading the book about "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholemew. It is REALLY interesting and you learn lots of ways to save space while gardening. I am excited to put his techniques to work for me this Spring.
I hope you are all doing well and loving the fall weather. I love the colors of fall, they are beautiful!

Forgive me for being LAME LAME LAME
Yes, please forgive me for being LAME LAME LAME! My scrap booking extravaganza and puttered out quite quickly! A dead camera battery is to blame....and me being lame doesn't help!
I will try to remedy this situation "toute suite"!
In the meantime....here is something RANDOM....
I bought some Greek Yogurt the other day because my cousins said it was from the Gods. Well, now that I think about it, he probably didn't say that since he claims he is anti-theist....or atheist....so he probably just said something like "this stuff is unbearable delicious." But anyway, I digress....I bought some....and to me, it got a thicker consistency than your plain old yogurt, to me its like a good sour cream...not the low fat kind, the real stuff. So, I looked at the label and it seems like it has less fat that the same amount of sour cream....so I think this would be a great substitute for it.
I used it in a 7 layered dip....which now that I think about it was probably more like 8 layers....this weekend and it worked out just groovy.
I love lower calorie things that are good for you and closely mimicker the real thing!
Now, I have to warn you that this stuff is more expensive than the regular stuff...I think this big old tub was around $4, which is pricey...but it is a good low cal sub for sour cream....so there you go!
I think I will postpone SCRAP BOOKING WEEK to NEXT WEEK so I Can be sure to get my camera all in order and functioning again. (Sorry people)
For now...be good....be good to yourself....eat healthy stuff....and go burn some calories!

I have my hands full
Howdy all,
Sorry for abandoning the blog a little this week, its been a busy week. My husband has to work the late shift at work 2 weeks out of every semester and that has been this week! I have a great appreciation for military spouses and single parents because by last night, my little boy was just driving me crazy. So, we went to bed early so I could relax a little and have some quiet. I should clarify that we were in bed but my little one certainly wasn't to sleep early, he rolled around and sat up and was generally just restless, but he finally conked out! It doesn't help that this week I started to get up at 5:00 a m so that I could start my boot camp workouts, so after coming home from work, making dinner, and eating....I was spent! Its 8:00pm and I am thinking it would be lovely to take a nice long hot bath and tuck in for the night....but no....needless to say my kitchen is a mess. I at least got the dishwasher empty, but the dirty dishes are still on the counter. I hope I don't win the Publisher's Clearinghouse tonight and they come surprise me with a big check and film me walking in my kitchen!!!! (Okay, I might take the humiliation for a large amount of cash.....or even just an awesome pair of shoes.)
My accomplishment last night was that the living room was fairly decent because we did get the toys picked up....it seems like it only took about 12 hours for that to happen....I said the phrase "put the letters in the bag" about 87 times as he would get distracted while "cleaning up". Poor little guy was probably thinking "but mom, this is the letter R and I REALLY like this letter." and I was thinking "I think he has put 2 letters in that bag in the last 5 minutes." Oh well, I slept well and got to sleep in until 6:00 a m since I didn't have normal boot camp today.
Today my goal is going to be to not get sick! My throat has been sore for 2 days so I am trying to drink warm liquids, take my meds, and heal! Its probably allergies that were blown in with this cold front....did I mention it went from 70 to 50 within a few hours on Wednesday and its been rainy and in the 40s since. We needed the rain, but the cold with the rain sure does make it miserable....unless you are one of those people who gets to stay inside, snuggle in your PJs and read a good book with some liquid chocolate in an amazingly cute mug....if you are one of those people....I am envious...green with it!
So, I leave next week for my scrap booking retreat so I will have some ideas and new crafts from that. I will also try to post some fun things before I go!
Stay Safe and be good! Remember to do something beautiful for yourself today!

Random Thoughts--Recovering from the run in with the cement
Howdy,
I haven't been chatting as much lately because I have been recovering from my fall. Turns out that I had dislocated at least one bone in my hand and that hurt. The next morning after my fall, my right hand was still hurting so I had decided I better go see the doc. So, I made an appointment and I could get in at 11am. So, I went on into work and figured I would try to get a few things done. I dropped off my little boy at school and then was driving to work when I heard a distinct "pop" sound....I thought "well, that was kind of a weird pop" and then I realized I must have popped something back into place because all of the sudden I could move my hand better and it was in far less pain...whew, did it feel better! So, I thought I would just cancel my doc appointment but my hubby and staff encouraged me to go and told me all these horror stories about people they knew who didn't go to the doctor and what terrible thing happened to them...so I went! I really do not mind going to the doctor because I love my doctor...and when I say I love him, I REALLY do...because he is my cousin and we have always been great friends...pretty much all our lives. So, he gets is X-rayed and said that I must have popped everything back in place because it looked okay now and there were no cracks or breaks...which I figured, but its better to be safe than sorry. He wrapped up my hand in a brace for me and told me to keep ice on it and take advil and I would be good to go. So, I did and it is doing better now. It was mainly the far right side of my right hand, so the pinkie and ring finger and down...do you know how hard it is to type without those 2 fingers...or at least with those 2 fingers bound together to make one giant finger. Needless to say, that for all my non-business related emails, there were no caps because that it the pinkie finger I use for the shift key (never took a real typing class, so that is--I am sure---the wrong was to do it but oh well.).
So, now today I only wore my brace for a little while...basically until I went o get my nails done because they did not have access to those 2 fingers. But, it seems to be healing nicely because it has only been moderately sore today as I have used it. Really, the thing that hurts the most is my left knee...the one with the big ol' scrape...man alive, does that hurt? My age must make some kind of a difference because I never remember them hurting this much when I got them in elementary school. I have a big ol' scab on it now so hopefully it will heal up soon, but remember that it is a knee and it moves a lot so the healing will not be done in a jiffy, I am afraid. Meanwhile I have a bruise on my other knee and just light scrapes or small bruises in various other parts that collided with the cement. I hope to be good as new soon!
But, with all the above, you can guess that I have not worked out as much over the last 2 days...nope, I have not. I figured I better let my body recover and then I will start again on Monday. Besides, your body just aches when these things happen so I have come home from work and just laid on the couch and rested because I was plum tuckered out!
Anyway--can you believe it is the 6th of December...well, its 12:03am so I guess its actually the 7th. Christmas will be here in no time! Its less than 3 weeks away! WOW! I am getting ready...I have lists upon list of what I need to take for our trip and what not to forget and presents I need to finish, etc and I hope to not lose any of my lists before I actually need them. Having never made a cross country trip with a 2 year old, I am trying to take everything I need without taking unnecessary crap....easier said than done!
I have small gifts for him to open and play with along the way plus we have a few places that we will stop to stretch our legs and such. We also just bought a DVD player for the car...actually it comes with 2 players (one for each head rest) so he and I can both watch the movie. I don't plan on using that for the whole trip, its really more of a last resort but still a way to entertain him as we drive for 12 hours.
I also have to have my house clean before I leave. While I usually try to do that anyway, I have people who will come stay and take care of our small beasts...the cat and 2 dogs...while we are away. We can't let them starve for 2 weeks now, can we?
Anyway--tomorrow is Sunday, so yay for church, and then we will be coming home and changing into more casual clothes and hading over to our weekly lunch or dinner over at my brother's house to eat, talk, have fun...and oh yeah...watch the Cowboys. The Cowboys need to win every game from here on out...including the Superbowl....it that too much to ask? And, my Fantasy Football is hanging on by a thread and hoping for a wildcard in the playoffs, if I lose, I am out...so the pressure is on...and my key player and favorite player, Marion the Barbarian, is hurt. Total bummer.
Anyway--I should be in bed snoozing...or at least reading my scriptures or working on my Primary/Sunday School lesson...so, I think I better sign off!
Stay warm!

Random Thoughts--After Turkey Fun
Howdy and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! Do you like the new layout? I have been playing with it for days and I like this one today, no telling if I will like it tomorrow....so stay tuned. If you hate it or love it, please let me know. If it is hard to read, let me know that too so I can adjust the colors.
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with my family and it was fun, exciting, and memorable. Almost all the men folk ate our early Thanksgiving day lunch and then hit the road for Big D as they travelled to the Dallas Cowboys traditional Thanksgiving Day Game. The excitement was electric...those boys were so excited they could hardly stand it and they all donned their favorite Cowboys paraphernalia and headed north. It was a great game and they had a great time. It will definitely be a memorable day for them to remember. The girls had a good time at home with the kids (I should say that we all had the opportunity to go as well, but I thought I would let my hubby go and I would stay and watch our little guy...but I would have loved to have gone as well!). We played and played and watched TV and played...it was fun and the cousins have so much fun when they are together...never a dull moment...or a quiet one! We are also especially excited to have another little cousin heading our way in just a few weeks, so we threw a family baby shower for Anne and showered her with some last minute gifts. It will be fun to see them as parents and to welcome another beautiful baby into our family.
Then Black Friday is made for SHOPPING!!! My sisters and I love to hit the stores, and although we had one store opening at 4am, we decided to wait and be somewhat sane and not go until 6am. The first store we went to was packed and we waited in line 20-30 minutes just to check out, then we headed to my little sister and my favorite children's clothes store...The Children's Place...we L-O-V-E LOVE that place and you can tell by looking at most of our kids clothes. We took Anne along too so she could experience the love that is Children's Place and she was right there with us, arms full and grabbing some GREAT bargains. We all walked out of there with tons of beautiful kids clothes and bargains galore! We then headed to Panera Bread and ate a quick breakfast before we hit a couple more stores. We love Panera, I had the egg souffle with asparagus and spinach and it was total fab-ness...my sisters had the breakfast sandwich that they said was the best breakfast sandwich they ever had...we all loved it! Then, we headed to our favorite and relatively newly found store...Anne Taylor...we shopped here a few months ago at Anne's insistence and have since been converted. Its all about that whole buy quality thing instead of quantity that I have spoken of before...Anne Taylor clothes are beautiful...the colors are saturated and lovely, the styles are trendy and classic, depending on whatever you want, and when you catch a great sale...it is really quite affordable....and we caught an awesome sale!
You know how you have some outfits that you know you look good in...so good that you want to wear them every day because you know you look your best in...the outfits that you look skinnier than anything else you own...those are my Anne Taylor clothes...My little sister and I had our similarities confirmed as we kept coming up to each other and showing each other the same clothes, or she would say "This is so cute" and I would say "Do they have my size?" Its a good thing we don't live in the same town because we bought some of the exact same outfits. (As a side note, when we both lived in the same town, we would show up at events or church or whatever and be wearing the same thing without ever even talking to each other...sometimes it was a little embarrassing!)
Anyway, I am so sold on Anne Taylor stuff that I wonder if I ever want to shop anywhere again...really, it was that good. And I am hoping we hit the jackpot sometime this week because they are having another sale next week and you can use these $25 coupons we got this week...I could easily go spend a ton more!
Anyway--It was a fun shopping time for us all and now we know better that next time we do not need to get up at 4am or 6am, just wait until 8am when Children's Place opens and then head over the Panera for breakfast until Anne Taylor opens. It will be a beautiful thing!
Another wonderful thing that happened that day was the phrase that Lindsey said to me when I was trying on one outfit...we always come out and model the outfits and she said "I think you need a smaller size"...Wow...that was music to my ears! And, the best thing of all was that my favorite item was a beautiful chocolate chip brown jacket (Linz has one too now) and the largest size they had was a 10 so I grabbed it just to see if I might could fit into it...and it fit!!! I am not in a size 10 jeans yet, but I will get there eventually!
Speaking of sizes...I need to go to high heels camp tonight and get in a workout!
Much love and holiday greetings to you all!

Random Thoughts--I have gotten a ton done this week!
Howdy!
Its been a strange week for me this week. Since my son was sick for the first half, I was home with him and got to spend some time around the house. On Saturday, my hubby had to go help out one of his former farmers that he used to work with when he was in the poultry industry, so my son and I were together all day again. We went grocery shopping, then came home for a while and then went to Target. Then he conked out for a nice nap and I got some quality time on the computer making hotel reservations for our Christmas driving trip. I then baked 2 batches of wheat bread (the equivalent of 8 loaves) and a batch of corn bread, plus I mixed up the dry ingredients for 2 more batches that I will make tonight and again later this week. Because I have been home so much, I feel like the weight of the world is off my shoulders and things are finally starting to go back to normal at my house. Its been such a crazy semester with Hurricane Ike and our normal super busy football season, plus I am involved with a major renovation on campus and that has taken up extra time as well...its been one of the craziest semesters I have had in the 8 years I have worked for the university. But as of now, all my dishes are clean, my laundry is completely done except for the clothes we wore yesterday....I love that feeling. I have even matches up a ton of socks! The laundry is all put away (except for the socks which are heading there soon.) and things are more organized. Now, I still have a few odds and ends here I need to pick up, but its such a relief to have that all done before I get to the Thanksgiving break! Whew! I have been a busy girl!
And to add to all the craziness, my husband goes to church early to go to some meetings and he called and told me not to hurry and get ready for church today because he thought it would be cancelled...huh? You don't just cancel church? Well, he was standing outside waiting for the fire department to say the building was clear and they could re-enter. There had been a small electrical fire and the building was full of smoke! They didn't think they could get it cleared and get the smell out (that burned rubber plus electrical smell) out in time for church to start in an hour, so they cancelled it. So, I was able to piddle around the house and do a few odds and ends and have a nice relaxing morning. It was quite nice!
I am excited for Thanksgiving and all the fun and food that goes with it. This year has flown by and I can hardly believe that it is almost December...with Thanksgiving being late this year, you literally put away the turkey and pull out the Christmas lights!
I hope this post finds you all doing well and happy as we head into the holiday season. This time of year is a joyous time of year and I hope you can find some joy, no matter what your circumstances are.
Happy Sabbath!
Heather

Random Thoughts--The Laundry Monster

While I generally hate to admit my shortcomings (and there are many but I am not going to list them, there is not enough space on blogger!), I am baring all today as I show you what I worked on yesterday....piles and piles of LAUNDRY! Life has been busy for the past month and I just could not get a hold of the monster that is our laundry. This picture is a good example of how it can take over your dining and living area. While this is A LOT, this is not all of it, there are more piles on the outskirts of this picture and still a little bit more waiting to be hung up or folded. At least The Biggest Loser was on last night so I had something entertaining to watch while I folded and folded and hung up (or is it hanged up? I know a person is hanged and not hung (well, okay, so someone could be hung but this is a G rated blog...most of the time)....but I am not sure about laundry) and folded again....and still have more to do today! But, it will be done today...I can see it...the light at the bottom of the laundry basket....it is there, I can feel it!
So, for anyone who thinks they are the only ones buried under laundry....nope! I am right there with you, gasping for breathe and hoping it doesn't suffocate me! That is what the dining room table is for right? Folded clothes? At least my center piece looks cute right?
I can think of at least one other time when all the laundry in my house was done and it was pure bliss! In fact, I wanted to go wash anything as soon as it was dirty because I didn't want to have that ugly pile of clothes staring at me again....so there you go...
Note to Self....
Self, I will keep up with the laundry from now and and will not let this happen again....okay, that may be a stretch so I will at least hope that I can keep this up until our trip in December! How is that for making a lofty goal and then smash it back down to size....I hate being defeated, can you tell?

Random Thoughts: The Compromise

Does anyone else have this problem? My husband is in charge of taking out the trash. Its not a hard job, its actually quite easy....but its one of those chores that I JUST HATE! So, its his job.
However...I am always having to say "Honey, can you take out the trash, the can is full and I am trying to clean up the kitchen?" Eventually he will...but sometimes it is the next day....and then he complains "The trash it too full, don't fill it up so much." Uh, hullo...I told you last night it needed to be taken out....
So, his suggestion to make this better....get a bigger trash can...you know the one, the big gray industrial commercial garbage can that you might put out on the curb for trash day or something. Oh yes! That would look lovely in my French Country black and white with red accents kitchen...perfect! (NOT!) And besides...kitchen trash is the kind that gets stinky after a little while...so you don't want it all just sitting there for days on end...much less do I want to give him a hernia when he has to take out the trash.
So, I was at Linens and Things today because the one in our town is going out of business (they may all be, I think they declared bankruptcy) and they were having a sale. So, I went in to peruse the store looking for great bargains. I didn't really find anything because the store wasn't marked down a whole lot yet, but I did find this trash can. Its my version of a compromise. Its bigger than the one we had...its black so it matches...it has a lid too, so that is a bonus...but its not ginormous or terribly ugly. So, we will see how this lovely can works out.
I am hoping it solves all our problems...now if it would only learn how to unload and load the dishwasher! :)
I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend, mine has been good so far. Its a home football weekend, so I worked this morning, then stopped by Michael's to pick up some lollipop sticks and melting chocolate for my cake balls that I am making for tomorrow, went to Linens and Things, then came home and ate, took a nap with my son, and cleaned my kitchen. Pretty exciting stuff! Then about 8pm, I got an email from my sister needing me to check my local Wal Mart for some supplies they need for one of their classes, so I ran up there and got some stuff for them and now I am back home watching tech beat t.u....its one of those games where I root for a tie because I dislike both teams...mainly because they can both beat us this year but in general, Aggies, t-tips, and red raiders carry a strong dislike for each other team wise...but I have quite a few friends who unfortunately graduated from one of those establishments and I manage to be friends with them just the same.
On a great note...the Aggies pulled off another win today...and at Kyle Field...always a good thing!
Now I need my cowboys to win tomorrow!
Get a good nights rest and have a blessed Sabbath!

Random Thoughts--Straight Hair
I am a curly headed girl...have been pretty much since I was a little girl, in fact my hair is probably curlier now than when I was little. I am not one of those curly head haters who hates her curly hair...on the contrary, I love it and it has done me well over the years....especially in the 80s when big hair was queen and Stiff Stuff was a girl's best friend. However, everyone wants a change now and then and I really like some of the new straighter hair styles. I have had a straightener for years, just a Revlon Ceramic one that I thought was probably pretty good and possibly equal to those Chi's that everyone raves about. My Revlon one was getting worn out and just not doing the job anymore, so I started to look around....
Say hello to my new best friend....
Say hello to my new best friend....
This little object may not look like much but it packs a powerful punch!
This is a Chi Hair Straightener by Farouk. These things are expensive...I have never seen them for under $129 I don't think, you might can find them on sale for $99 occasionally. I have had a few hair straighteners in my time and NOTHING compares to the Chi. I have a friend of a friend who works for the Farouk company so she got me a steal of a deal on one and I figured I might as well try it. This thing works wonders on my hair....yes, it actually straightens it! This is no small task! not only does it straighten it....the straightness hold all day long. Before, I would straighten it and it would look fine in the morning but by noon I was a fuzzy head and by 5pm I was a combination of fuzz and flat all rolled up into one...not anymore.
The thing is amazing...and worth every penny. Chi, I am sorry I ever doubted you.
Its changed my life. I now can wear a page boy haircut and look in style and (hopefully) cute and know that I can achieve this hair even in Texas in July. Amazing.

Random Thoughts-Fruits and Veggies
We have always been told to eat our vegetables...but we need to make sure we are doing that on a regular basis. I was in a nutrition class the other day and the teacher told us that you need to eat a fruit or vegetable with every meal and snack. Starchy vegetables are good but green ones are better! And I hate to break it to you that French Fries really don't count unless they are homemade and baked!
He said that if you maintain your same eating habits as you do now and just add fruits and veggies to every meal and snack, that you will lose weight. Fruits and Veggies are made up of something like 1000 nutrients that your body uses and science has only been able to identify 100 of those nutrients, so the other 900 or so help us in ways we do not know! So eat your fruits and veggies and cut down on the processed foods and sugary sweets! Your body will thank you for it!
And as far as pasta goes...try the whole wheat variety...I have found that for most things, there is not much of a difference. I especially like it in penne.
I have been doing my best to eat more natural foods (less processed) and to et healthier and I have to admit that I have more energy and feel better! Maybe these people do know what they are talking about!
Happy Eating!

Random Thoughts--Towels

Good Morning!
Today I am going to talk about towels...yep, that is not such an exciting topic but it was for me this weekend. I have been married 11 years and many of our towels were gifts when we got married. Needless to say, they have had their better days! Anyway, when I got married, I wanted green and maroon towels for this bathroom and white ones for this bathroom, etc and I ended up with all these different colored towels...that cannot be washed together or I will end up with some lovely brownish towels! So, we decided we would splurge and buy new towels for the house and I wanted to get some good quality towel...soft, thick, durable....
So, I went to Kohl's this weekend and they were having a huge sale, so I felt every towel in that joint and came up with a low, middle, and high grade and then went for the mid-high grade...and ended up taking them all back the next day because my husband said "There were softer ones and they were only a dollar or two more? Get the softer ones!" So, I went back and for about $1.50 more (they were 50% off by the way), I got these FAB-U-LOUS Laura Ashley towels. These things are so soft that my son has been carrying one around as a blanket! When I took my first bath with one, I was so amazed at how soft and absorbent it was...man, this is the life. Now, I think these towels are normally $16.99 which is way more than I think I would ever spend on a bath towel, but I got them 50% off and I think there was an additional 10% off, so I paid $7 something...which my head still tells me is high but I like them so much I decided I didn't care...and my husband is really big on buying quality that will last...a lesson I am still learning because I like to save moolah!
So, pamper yourself and go buy a nice towel if you can....but warning--you may never go back to cheap towels!
Who loves ya? I do! Thanks for reading!
